Before there was yoga fad and Zumba boom now it’s CrossFit, a combination of high-intensity moves and strength-training that instills awe and pride into people who do it. For others it could be intimidating though. Gruelling WODs (workouts of the day) and competitive nature of CrossFit isn’t for everybody but if you haven’t ever tried it you might want to give it a shot before deciding whether it is something you can enjoy.
What Is CrossFit?
CrossFit is many things and it does not specialize on anything particular. The official website states that:
CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.
CrossFit is based on functional movements that the body was designed to do, intensity, and variety. Workouts in CrossFit vary from day to day and are designed to increase endurance and strength.
How To Enjoy CrossFit
Learn Proper Form
Beside all the good CrossFit can give you, it can be very physically demanding and risky so learning proper form when doing any and every exercise is the key to preventing injury. Also making sure not to skip or be late for warm-up is important in any type of training, if you want to keep injuries at bay.
Embrace Challenge
CrossFit’s about challenge. Whether you have to complete as many exercises in certain limited time span as possible or do as many reps as possible during your WOD, it’s always a new challenge there that won’t let you get easily bored or plateaued when it comes to performance or appearance results.
Compete With Caution
CrossFit has a competitive element to it. Whether you have to do as many reps or sets of exercises as possible you should always practice caution and good form. Besides there is no point in competing with anyone except yourself (unless you’re training for the games).
Find Good CrossFit Box
With CrossFit boxes opening up at a rapid rate across the world it can be difficult to immediately determine which CrossFit gyms have competent staff and which ones are simply after the brand. There are few ways to go about this – get recommendations from avid CrossFitters or talk to the staff about their experience and their level of involvement in CrossFit. Even if your gym coach is fairly new to CrossFit (the program is relatively new itself) he or she should have education, previous experience of training, and proper certifications.
CrossFit is a great way to try and do different things. You will get to try strength-training, running (mostly sprinting), and other sports and types of training. If you like variety and community in your workouts then it might be just the type of workout for you.
