5 Extreme Fitness Events
Marathon des Sables
Training for a marathon through Sahara desert sounds tough, marathon itself sounds hellish. A six day route through a dry dry scorching desert where temperatures considerably plummet at night, a few kilos worth of food, water supply, and emergency kits plus spare shoes of a bigger size (feet tend to swell up to two sizes), and the endless sand can avert even seasoned marathoners but this one’s for those who really like extremes.
Iron Man Triathlon
Iron Man Triathlon is one of the biggest triathlon events there is. Its three parts go as follows 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride, and, finally, a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km). To give you a comparison of what a regular triathlon looks like, just divide those numbers roughly by two.
Tough Mudder
Tough Mudder is an obstacle course of 10-12 miles (18-20 km) designed to test both your physical and mental strength. Swim in ice water, crawl through mud, and cross an electric field if you dare. Various mud runs also offer less intense races through muddy environments for those who are bored with regular races.
Chasqui Challenge
If neither sand nor mud attract you, then maybe a race in the Andes Mountains could pique your interest. Taking place in Peru each summer this 100-mile multi-stage adventure run will take you to Machu Picchu and around Mt. Ausangate allowing you to enjoy a historic tour, camp in the mountains, as well as run a marathon.
Antarctic 100k Marathon
Finally, if you are more into winter sports the Antarctic 100k marathon takes place each January and presents a challenge for best and toughest athletes. But if you’re feeling capable and have done a lot of other ultra races this might be the one last goal. Of course, the entrance fee is one of the most extreme as well almost reaching $15,000.
